About ChunkLock

ChunkLock begins with the map switched off: players start boxed into one chunk and must gather specific resources to unlock each neighbouring one. That constraint rebuilds early Minecraft from scratch. A sixteen-by-sixteen square is not much ground, and the first hours are spent working out what the surrounding chunks are likely to contain. In an ordinary world, the answer to needing a resource is to walk until you find it; here, walking is the thing you have to earn. Every unlock is a deliberate purchase, which forces genuine decisions about direction — expanding toward a biome you need means not expanding toward one you also need — and turns the map into a puzzle rather than a backdrop. It also compresses the game's usual sprawl. Instead of a base surrounded by thousands of untouched blocks, players occupy a visible, hard-edged territory that grows in discrete steps. Progress is legible at a glance, which is unusual in survival Minecraft and a large part of why the format has spread. Beyond the core mechanic there are islands holding their own content and dungeon encounters to work through, giving unlocked territory somewhere to lead rather than simply ending. The whole thing runs without client modifications, which is worth emphasising. Formats this structural are usually delivered as modpacks; implementing it server-side means the barrier to entry is entering an address, with nothing to install and nothing to keep updated. Anyone who can open Minecraft can play it. org.chunklock.com is the address, running 1.21. This is a Java-only world, so console and mobile clients are outside its reach. The format suits players who find open-world survival unfocused — who want an objective in front of them and a clear sense of having advanced. It is a poor fit for anyone whose pleasure in Minecraft comes from wandering off in an arbitrary direction to see what is there.
