FreshSMP is a public crossplay survival server running a conventional world alongside lifesteal, skyblock and duelling alternatives. Its central world is straightforward shared survival — open map, other people, no unusual constraints. That plainness is the appeal for a substantial audience: many players want Minecraft as it already is, with other people in it, and no ladder or premise imposed on top. Public access means no application and no whitelist, so joining takes an address. Lifesteal supplies the sharper variant, where defeating another player moves a heart of maximum health between the two, making conflict permanently consequential and gradually concentrating power. Skyblock inverts the resource situation entirely, starting from near-nothing over empty space. Duels provide contained combat with none of the risk that open PvP carries, which is the sensible way to scratch that itch without endangering an inventory. Scheduled events run across these, giving the population reasons to gather rather than dispersing into individual projects — the usual failure mode of open survival servers, where everyone builds separately and never meets. play.freshsmp.fun accepts Java and Bedrock alike, Bedrock arriving on the standard port, running current Minecraft on North American infrastructure. Servers of this shape are best judged on population rather than features, because the feature list is deliberately unremarkable. What makes a plain survival server good is who else is there and whether moderation keeps it civil, neither of which appears in a description. Checking the player count at the hour you would normally play tells you more than any list of gamemodes, and a quiet public SMP offers considerably less than a busy one. The duelling and lifesteal worlds in particular need other people present to mean anything at all. Plainness is the design, and it only works with people in it. The feature list is deliberately ordinary; the population is not.
