Minecraft PvP Server Types Explained: Lifesteal, KitPvP, Factions and More
Compare Minecraft PvP server types: Lifesteal, KitPvP, Factions, BoxPvP, Anarchy, Bedwars and Skywars. How each plays, who it suits, and where to find servers.

Minecraft PvP servers come in a handful of distinct types: Lifesteal (kills transfer hearts), KitPvP (pick a kit and fight), Factions (claim land and raid rivals), BoxPvP (fight and mine inside an enclosed map), Anarchy (minimal rules) and minigame PvP such as Bedwars and Skywars. Pick Lifesteal or Factions if you want long-term stakes, KitPvP or a minigame if you want instant matches, and check the version and edition on the listing before you join. The table below compares each type.
"PvP server" is a broad label. A KitPvP lobby, a Lifesteal SMP and a Factions world share one idea, players fighting players, but they reward very different habits. This guide defines each type in a sentence or two, says who it suits, and links to the matching MCVoting list so you can see current servers. Counts below were read from MCVoting's gamemode pages on 19 October 2026 and change as servers are added or removed.
Minecraft PvP Server Types Compared
| Type | How it plays | Best for | MCVoting listings | List |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lifesteal | Kills take a heart from the loser and give it to the killer; running out of hearts removes you until a reset | High-stakes survival with consequences | 32 | Lifesteal servers |
| KitPvP | Choose a preset kit and go straight into combat | Fast fights with no gear grind | 11 | KitPvP servers |
| Factions | Groups claim land, build defended bases and raid enemy factions | Team play, strategy and base building | 20 | Factions servers |
| BoxPvP | Enclosed PvP arenas combined with mining and gear progression | Constant combat with a progression loop | 7 | BoxPvP servers |
| Anarchy | Minimal rules and moderation, as described on the hub | Experienced players who want few restrictions | 12 | Anarchy servers |
| Bedwars | Teams defend their own bed and destroy enemy beds, then eliminate everyone | Short team matches | 10 | Bedwars servers |
| Skywars | Players start on separate floating islands and fight to be the last one standing | Quick solo or squad matches | 7 | Skywars servers |
Listings carry a tag when an owner or admin assigns it, so a server in a list is not always built around that mode. Always read the listing description first. For the full set, see all PvP servers on MCVoting.
What Is Lifesteal in Minecraft?
Lifesteal is a PvP survival mode where killing a player takes one of their hearts and adds it to yours. Losing every heart eliminates you until the server resets, which makes each fight matter.
It suits players who enjoy survival but want real risk. Many Lifesteal servers add an economy on top. Minehut Lifesteal, for example, describes heart banking, heart transfers, team vaults and an auction house alongside its PvP.
What Is KitPvP?
KitPvP is a mode where you pick a preset kit of gear and fight immediately instead of gathering resources. Different kits have different loadouts and abilities, so the skill is in choosing and using them well.
It suits players who want a match in seconds. Browse the KitPvP list, and note that some tagged servers are general survival or economy servers with a KitPvP element, so check what the description says.
What Are Factions Servers?
Factions is a competitive PvP mode where players form groups, claim land, defend bases and raid enemy factions. It mixes survival mechanics with strategy, warfare and an economy.
It suits people who like playing as a team and planning attacks. Perilous Factions is a listed example: its page describes building a faction, claiming territory, gathering resources and forming alliances or fighting rivals.
What Is BoxPvP?
BoxPvP combines enclosed PvP arenas with mining and gear progression. Combat is constant, and resources come from mining and from defeating other players.
It suits players who want combat and a steady upgrade path in one place. It is a small category on MCVoting, so the list is short and worth browsing in full.
What Are Anarchy Servers?
Anarchy servers are the least restricted type of Minecraft multiplayer. The MCVoting hub describes them as having no rules, no moderation and no bans, which can include hacking and griefing.
They suit experienced players who accept that builds and items may be lost. Treat each server's own description as the authority, because rules differ and some listings tagged Anarchy describe more structured play.
Bedwars and Skywars: PvP Minigames
Bedwars and Skywars are round-based PvP minigames rather than persistent worlds. In Bedwars, teams spawn on islands with beds that allow respawning and win by destroying enemy beds and eliminating opponents. In Skywars, players start on separate floating islands and fight to be the last one standing.
They suit players who want a clear win condition every few minutes and do not want to maintain a base. Both are covered by dedicated lists: Bedwars and Skywars.

How to Choose a PvP Server
Match the Commitment to the Mode
Lifesteal and Factions reward weeks of play and can cost you what you have built. KitPvP, Bedwars and Skywars reset every round, so you can drop in for ten minutes.
Check Version and Edition First
Many listings show wide version ranges, but check the listing's version range and any version the server recommends in its description. Java and Bedrock players can only join together where the listing shows both editions and addresses. PvP also feels different between versions, so use the version the server recommends.
Read the Rules and What Happens to Your Items
Ask whether you keep items on death, whether land is protected and whether hacking is banned. This matters most on Factions, Lifesteal and Anarchy servers.
Look at Activity Before You Commit
A PvP server is only fun with opponents. Listings show status, player counts and monthly votes, which are useful signals but not guarantees. Voting is available on some listings and not on others, so check the listing rather than assuming. Our guide to joining a Minecraft server covers the connection steps.
